Think Pink, Drink Pink on National Rosé Day

Pink is passion, pink is powerful, and pink drinks are perfectly delicious. Gone are the days of associating pink with the sweet candied rosé wines of the past such as White Zinfandel. Although, one can see the appeal of such a wine with its sweet, low alcohol and candied fruit making such a delightful match for spicy cuisine. However, many are cautious of pink as they believe it means sweet, akin to the adult cherry kool-aid flavours found in some sweet rosé styles.

The rosé revolution is here to change minds. Most rosé wines are elegant and dry with nuances of summer berry fruits mingled with black pepper and spices. They are an ultimate food pairing match. On a global scale, volumes of rosé wines have been growing since 2011 and they are predicted to rise further. These wines may never overtake the white and red category, but where rosé wines lag in volume, they will certainly make up for in style.

Rosé wine is produced using red grapes. Any red grape will suffice, but Pinot Noir and Grenache show an affinity for the rosé style. The beautiful pink hue in these wines comes from the juice coming in to contact with the red grape skins. The thickness of the grape skin along with the period of skin contact will ultimately determine the intensity of colour and flavour. Rosé wines can range from a pale salmon tint to intensely vibrant and hot pink.

For the delicate styles look to the south of France from the Provence and Languedoc regions. Our local BC producers are crafting a myriad of styles these days from the light, pale and crisp to the concentrated and fruity with a hint of sweet. Open your mind to the power of pink this month and celebrate with some of fun rosé wines!
