David Stewart MBE of The Balvenie is an icon in the whisky business, his pioneering techniques and groundbreaking work around cask finishing has had a profound impact on the flavour profiles of Scotch whisky. In 2016, he was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen and he is poised to retire shortly at 76 after spending 59 years in the whisky industry. He will be handing over the reins to Kelsey McKechnie, whom he is currently mentoring, she has already worked on several expressions with him including the Balvenie 50: Marriage 0962 which is currently for sale.

The Balvenie Fifty: Marriage 0962

A marriage of whisky of this age is rare. David Stewart selected four American oak casks aged over 50 years to craft into an exquisite complex elixir. Bottled at 41.6% abv, this whisky shows great depth of aroma and flavour with brown sugar, toffee and ground ginger on the nose, followed by maple syrup, tangy citrus, vanilla and classic honeyed Balvenie sweetness on the finish.

Beautifully designed in a sleek, glass decanter representing the classic Balvenie bottle shape (which itself mirrors the silhouette of the copper stills at the distillery), the decanter has been hand-blown from 100% lead-free crystal.  The bottle is presented in a beautiful wooden tube comprised of 50 layers (48 of walnut and two of brass).  The presentation also includes an etched brass certificate and bottle glorifier, inscribed with the tasting notes of each constituent cask and the taste, palette and finish of the final marriage.

The Balvenie was established in 1893, the distillery sits in Dufftown in the Speyside region and is owned by William Grant & Sons. The name Balvenie means “village of luck” and as luck has it, many of their core range of whiskies are available here on the market.

It’s hard to pick a favourite as they are all so delicious but I would have to align with Jamie Johnson, Canada’s Balvenie Brand Ambassador, “My absolute favourite is the Caribbean Cask! It was the very first single malt I purchased YEARS before I started working with The Balvenie and I’ve never stopped loving it!”

The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 year

The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 year old has been matured in traditional oak whisky casks for 14 years, and then ‘finished’ in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. The result is an exceptional whisky with the traditional smooth, honeyed character of The Balvenie married with notes of toffee, a hint of fruit, and a warm, lingering finish.

The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 year

2018 marked the 25th anniversary of The Balvenie DoubleWood, aged 12 years.  To make The Balvenie DoubleWood, David Stewart MBE takes whisky that has spent at least 12 years in American Oak ex-bourbon barrels and then moves it to Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks for an additional nine months. The Sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour. Smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours ~ nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of Sherry.
