IPA’S Anytime, Anyway, Any Day!

IPA’S Anytime, Anyway, Any Day!

The term India Pale Ale was coined in reference to the style of ales that were being shipped down to the British colonies in India in the late 1700’s. India was too warm to brew beer back then as this goes back years before air conditioning. Casks of pale ales were shipped down from London and it was found that the higher the hop content the better preserved the ales were on arrival.

September 2020 Tasting Notes

Our September Flyer offers some great summer savings. As the days slowly get shorter and we head into the Fall equinox we wanted to offer you some fantastic deals for those patio and end of summer beach moments.

Loubadère Côtes de Gascogne
Loubadère is a small family owned winery tucked away in south-west of France. This lively and fruity white uses a blend of Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Gros Manseng. Showing vibrant citrus notes on the aromas with fresh flavours of pink grapefruit, apple and lemon on the palate. Sunshine in a bottle!

Wild Goose Autumn Gold
This fruity blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Blanc offers just a hint of sweetness balanced with zesty acidity. An easy drinking wine with fresh notes of ripe apple and stone fruits with a touch of honey. Sweet chili prawns would pair beautifully.

Protea Dry Rose
Dry Rose from South Africa using a blend of 3 classic Rhone varieties. Tangy entry to the mouth showing nectarine, citrus zest along with light fruity hints of plum and red cherry. Juicy acidity lends to a great match for goat cheese and summer salads.

Trapiche Pinot Noir
This Argentinian Pinot Noir is a light and refreshing fruit driven wine. It bursts with a melody of red fruit flavours of strawberry, cherry and ripe plum. An easy drinking style that can be enjoyed on its own. Pinot Noir goes beautifully with chargrilled BC salmon so fire up the barby!

Upper Bench Merlot
This full-flavoured Merlot from Upper Bench Winery in Naramata is super smooth like liquid velvet. Flavours abound with black cherry, dark chocolate, blueberry and cigar box. The sweet spices from 18 months ageing in 30% new French oak come in through the finish.

Shelter Point Wheat Whisky
We are proud to offer this as an Exclusive in collaboration with Shelter Point Distillery. This single cask wheat whisky is a first to be offered by the distillery. Locally sourced wheat was craft distilled and mellowed for 5 and ½ years in ex-Bourbon casks by the sea. Truly a one of a kind, tasting of summer and sea with hints of salinity and sweet honey.

Gosling’s Black Seal Rum
Founded in 1806, this Bermuda rum offers rich flavours of butterscotch, vanilla, charred orange peel and clove. The finish is smooth and spicy. Perfect over crushed ice with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime for that summer Dark and Stormy.

August 2020 Tasting Notes

Kick back and enjoy the laid-back days of summer with a few of these refreshing picks below. This month at JAK’S we are celebrating the local bounties that beautiful B.C. has to offer. Now, more than ever is the time to support local. We are fortunate to live in a province with so much talent contributing to our thriving wine, spirit and beer industry.

Laughing Stock Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris is one of the darling varietals of the Okanagan Valley. It ripens easily and consistently produces an enjoyable, fruit forward yet food friendly wine. This wine has a lovely fruit salad nose, nectarine, some green apple, and is lifted by a citrus note. Pairs well with a hot summer day or some creamy burrata with some grilled peaches.

Gratitude by JAK’s Pinot Blanc
Our Gratitude wines are brought to you by JAK’s Beer Wine and Spirits in collaboration with the talented team at Okanagan Crush Pad in Summerland, BC. This mid-weight Pinot Blanc just bursts with fruit flavour and vibrant acidity. A tangerine dream of bright tropical fruits with pineapple and zesty lime.

Free Form Vin Gris
Produced from Pinot Noir grapes grown in Summerland that were whole bunch pressed to large concrete tanks. The use of natural native yeast fermentation along with being bottled unfiltered shows through in the complexity of this wine. Hints of savoury herbal notes lend to this finely balanced expression of Pinot Noir with texture.

The Hatch Rose Athow
Delectable delights abound with this pink potion produced from Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. Delicious overtones of strawberry, rhubarb, and cherry pie. Fruity and fresh for crushing back on a hot summer day while nibbling on some BC candied salmon.

Moraine Pinot Noir
Grapes were hand-harvested on Naramata Bench for this classic Pinot Noir. An elegant mid-weight style that offers nuances of violet, Bing cherry and plum layered over a background of subtle toasty oak. Pair with grilled salmon to celebrate International Pinot Noir Day this August 18th. Pinot Noir pairs so beautifully with BC salmon!

Rebel Vodka
Unique vodka produced from the finest locally grown Okanagan apples. This vodka has been distilled 25 times in an artisan copper pot still, one batch at a time. Forbidden Spirits has created this fresh creamy smooth vodka that shows off just a hint of underlying fruitiness.

Sheringham Seaside Gin
From the rugged coast of Vancouver Island just north of Sooke comes this complex gin with a hint of the salty sea air. They use hand-harvested local winged kelp as one of the main botanicals. Citrus, floral and notes of the sea make this gin as refreshing as a seaside stroll. Congratulations to a gold for the World Gin Awards in 2019!
